Pediatric Ear Infections

Otitis media (OM), also commonly referred to as an ear infection, is described as inflammation of the middle ear that can be due to fluid build-up behind the eardrum.

Ear infections are most commonly seen amongst the pediatric population. Research shows that the most common reason that a parent brings their child in to see their pediatrician is for an ear infection.

Conventional medicine typically will recommend a 7–10-day round of amoxicillin or penicillin as treatment. For chronic cases of reoccurring ear infections, most pediatricians will recommend surgical insertion of ear tubes which is the most common pediatric surgery performed.  Ear tubes have since been shown to cause potential damage to the eardrum and can have a long-term negative impact on hearing.

As always, when looking at a symptom, especially one that is reoccurring such as an ear infection, the question to ask is “what is the cause.” We know that ear infections do not happen as a result of a lack of amoxicillin or penicillin in the body. There is always a cause! Here are a few things to check out that are natural remedies or approaches to address ear infections:

  1. Get your child checked by a pediatric chiropractor!

  7. If the child is an infant, allow for as much tummy time as possible.

  8. Garlic & Mullein drops (outer ear and on the inside of the tragus/surrounding area) DO NOT DROP LIQUID INTO CHILD’S EAR CANAL.

  9. If bathing in tub, no dunking head under water; use wash rag to wash hair or shower instead.

  10. If using conventional formula, opt for a goat’s milk formula instead.

  11. Onion (aids in pain relief and speeds up healing process). Cut an onion in half and place it over the affected ear. You can also gently heat a small portion of the onion until warm, but not soft, and tuck the heated onion into the ear opening (do not force onion deep into ear). A final option is to wrap the onion in a warm, moist cloth and use it directly on the ear.
